Yext Manages Your Listings. It Can't Tell You If Your Marketing Is Working.

Here's the difference — and why it matters for local business owners spending money on ads.

If you’ve looked at tools for your local business’s online presence, you’ve probably come across Yext. It’s a well-known name. It’s also frequently the product that gets compared to Digital Basics Score when someone is evaluating whether DBS is worth it.

They are not the same thing. Understanding the difference will save you from spending money on the wrong problem.

What Yext Actually Does

Yext is a listing management platform. What that means in practice: you pay Yext, and Yext pushes your business name, address, phone number, and hours to a network of directories — Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, and others.

That’s a real problem worth solving. Inconsistent listings genuinely hurt local search rankings. If your address is slightly different on three platforms, Google trusts you less.

But here is what Yext cannot tell you:

  • Whether your marketing is actually working.
  • Whether your website is converting the visitors it’s getting.
  • Whether your reviews are building trust or costing you referrals.
  • Whether your vendors — your ad agency, your SEO company, your social media manager — are delivering.
  • How you compare to the best competitors in your market.

Yext syncs your listings. Then it stops. The score you’re looking for — the one that tells you whether your digital foundation is actually working — is not something Yext produces.

What Digital Basics Score Does Instead

DBS runs a full audit of your digital foundation every week and returns a score. Not a vanity number — a real diagnostic with a prioritized fix list.

It covers four areas:

  • Major Directories: Yes, it checks directories — but it also tells you what’s missing, what’s wrong, and how you score against your local competitors.
  • Website, SEO & GEO: Is your website technically sound? Does it convert visitors into bookings? Is it set up for AI-generated search answers, not just traditional Google?
  • Social Media, SMS & Email: Are you staying connected to your customers? Are you on the right channels? Are you losing them because you’re invisible between visits?
  • Reviews & Reputation: How are you routing review requests? Are you responding? Are your reviews actually building trust, or are you leaving referrals on the table?

Every week, you see a score. Every week, you see how that score changed. Every week, you see where you stand against the best operators in your market.

The Part Yext Can Never Do

There is one reason Yext will never be able to offer what DBS offers, and it’s structural: Yext is a vendor.

No tool built by or sold through marketing agencies will ever honestly tell a business owner that their agency isn’t performing. That would be pointing a finger at themselves.

DBS was built by a business owner — someone who ran a salon, hired vendors, spent money on ads, and eventually built a diagnostic because nothing in the market told the truth about whether any of it was working.

That independence is the product. The score does not have an incentive to protect your agency or your SEO vendor. It tells you what’s working and what isn’t.

The Real Question

If your listing data is already consistent — or if you’re already paying someone to manage it — Yext may be solving a problem you’ve already solved.

The harder question is: do you actually know if your digital marketing is working? Do you know how your business scores against the best competitor in your market? Do you know what’s blocking customers from finding you, trusting you, and booking with you?

That’s what Digital Basics Score answers. Every week.
